Where To Eat

Neighbors! This page is still woefully incomplete! Please email in your best suggestions and prettiest food photography to spread the words about your favorite local finds!

DaLat Vietnamese Cuisine
If you're new to Vietnamese food, Federal Blvd. can be a bit overwhelming. DaLat is a lovely place to start. The combination noodle bowl is super yummy and very non-scary.

Columbine Steak House
Recommended by Jack as a neighborhood classic, the Columbine Steak House is a no nonsense affordable place to get delicious meat for your belly. It looks a tad worn, but is generally well reviewed on the internets.
300 Federal Blvd., Denver, CO 80219

Grandpa's Burger Haven
This old fashioned burger stand is heralded as a neighborhood staple and is pretty positively reviewed everywhere I've seen it reviewed. Recommended by Jack. Photo by The Burger Baron, a great website for burger reviews all around the Denver Metro area!

Pho Le
If you're not new to Vietnamese cuisine, or if you're looking for super traditional fare, Pho Le is the place for you. I got the Bún bò Huế, which is basically beef noodle soup. Floating rather prettily in my bowl was a pig's foot and a cube of congealed pig's blood. Pho Le is highly recommended by folks who know and love Vietnamese food. It might be a touch too traditional for noobs like me.

Star Kitchen
Star Kitchen is super well known for their incredible Dim Sum. I've tried a lot of their standard fare as well and it's always been delicious.

Baker's Street Pub
A dependable pub about 2.5 miles West of Barnum -- about an hour walk home if you find yourself in need of not-driving. And, not as sketchy as the much-closer White Horse (<--- fucking scary and dirty place. DO NOT VISIT unless you're a health inspector -- then, yes, please do visit). But the point is, Baker's Street is a thoroughly adequate place to get a beer and a bite to eat. And, the bartenders are quite nice.

Elephant Bar
Reliably good food with a pretty diverse menu. The decor is so dang British imperialism though, that it makes me think about colonialism the whole time I'm eating. So everything tastes vaguely like guilt. That's probably just me.

The Rock Wood Fired Pizza and Spirits
This is my second favorite neighborhood pizza shop (first favorite is Belmonti's!). They frequently play old music videos on their tvs, which is fabulously mesmerizing. Everything I've ordered so far has been perfection, from white pizzas to red, cheese bread to sweet potato french fries. Their beer selection is somewhat limited, but I really don't care because their pizza is so dang good.

Wasabi Sushi Bar
Having spent the last decade enthralled by The Sushi Den, I didn't immediately try Wasabi. But I should have. It's really good. And, they serve your maki on the most adorable little boat-shaped platters. They have a lot of options for folks like me who are not down with sashimi (raw stuff). My favorites? Teriyaki Shrimp, the Batman Roll, and the Yummy Roll. Their Dragon Roll has chicken in it instead of eel which is weird, but whatever.

King's Land
My favorite place to get dim sum on the weekend. Exceptionally fast service and fantastic dumplings.

Lookin' Good
American, Mexican, and Greek fare with some occasional karaoke.

Peppers Restaurant
Well, their sign normally says that they have the best green chili in Denver. And also they say they have the best pancakes. I haven't tried it out myself. Diner fare. Might be a good Sunday morning excursion. Suggested by Paige.

Winchell's Donut House
Well, if you want a donut, and you want to not leave the neighborhood, here's your place. The parking lot is a total wreck waiting to happen. Drive safe!

  1. Hello - I love your blog! I was recently on the house hunt, and looked at many homes in Barnum... but we ended up in Athmar Park. That is the neighborhood South of Alameda, East of Federal, West of South Platte River and North of Mississippi. It has been great so far! We actually live down the street from Star Kitchen, which I look forward to trying out. Thank you for the recommendations and for mentioning some great places in the Athmar Park neighborhood.
